The CORE HL7 Definition is just a programming object member of the which contains both structural and contextual information about a specific "flavor" of HL7. The "flavor" is typically determined by the HL7 Version and further clarified by the definition's Name. For instance, you might deal with receiving HL7 from or sending HL7 to 5 different Laboratories. They might all use HL7 Version 2.5.1 BUT each one might produce or require VERY different HL7 data (particularly a Lab's fondness for custom Z segments).
